Community Events

Fire Prevention Week activities are held at Mountain View Public School.  These include a fire drill at the school, a meet the volunteers, a visit from Sparky, demonstrations using fire extinguishers, reviewing Sparky’s ABCs of fire safety, a power point presentation to the older students reviewing fire prevention and what to do when fire occurs, and handing out fire prevention colouring pages, pamphlets and treats from Sparky to the students.  Teachers and staff also participate in these activities.  The GFR has developed a partnership with Mountain View Public School in promoting character and developing a positive relationship with the students and staff.

The GFR volunteers are always up to contributing to most community events.  In addition to the events mentioned, GFR volunteers also participate in Mountain View School’s annual turkey dinner and in December, participating in the annual Christmas caroling around the bonfire at the Captain Tilley as well as Stuffing a Fire Truck with toys and can food. To support our local Kitchen Food Cupboard. Santa arrives by fire truck to greet the children, a fun filled evening. During Snowfest in February Skate with Sparky or have a snowmobile ride around Captain Tilley. Specific Fire Prevention information at every event.

GFR promotes fire prevention and public education through this page and our Facebook site. Messages from the GFR such as burning times, chimney cleaning reminders, statistics on house fires, and information regarding community events are advertised.

GFR also distributes information pamphlets to all stores in the Goulais River area for community members to access at any time.

Fire prevention pamphlets, brochures and information sheets are handed out to community members at every community event hosted by GFR.  Information includes heating regulations, smoke detector information, burning regulations, Sparky activities, Older & Wiser program information, home escape plans, kitchen safety and more.
